La Manga (Spain) Training Camp 2014

2014 La Manga

(Spain) Training Camp Report

Ex GRAND SLAM 2014 was held in La Manga, Spain in March for the second year running and was just as successful as the last. This year 36 people attended, featuring players from the Ladies, Mens, Ladies 'Masters' and

Mens 'Masters' teams, along with the Army coaches Allan Saul and Austin Coventry.

A weeks intensive training is an excellent model as it provides players the opportunity to improve over a concentrated period of training, as well as setting a team ethos across all the teams who have little opportunity to come together. The camp was hosted by the La Manga Tennis Club, which holds world-class training facilities.

(Spain) Training Camp Report

Training started each day at 1000hrs with Austin putting the men under their paces focussing on speed work and sprinting sessions, whilst Allan had the girls hitting 100s of balls. Each day focused respectively on ground strokes, volleys and serving interspersed with lots of match play. Four hours of coaching, with fleeting breaks to eat lunch, ended each day with a fun competition between the blue and red team to accumulate points in preparation for the final day of matches. Many of the men's players obviously felt the sprinting sessions were not pushing them hard enough and continued playing after the coaching in their own bespoke tournament - there was clearly a healthy internal rivalry between players!

More Info & Special Thanks

More Info:

Time off the courts was spent relaxing round the pool, eating carbs and paella in perpetration for the next

day's training and bonding in the local bar in the main square.

Five days of coaching ended with a final day of singles, doubles and mixed matches between the red and blue team. After some nail biting matches the blue team secured a clear victory and the week was cemented with a team drink at the bar.
