A few words from the Ladies' Captain - LT Hislop

Perhaps every tennis player worldwide harbours an unspoken fantasy about playing on the sacred turf at SW19. Membership of this prestigious club is so hard to obtain that winning Wimbledon Championships might even be the easiest way to join! After a couple of years at alternative venues due to the refurbishment of Court One, the 2019 Inter-Service Championships returned to the home of Tennis. It was immediately clear to all first-timers that this venue really earns its international reputation; the courts are so immaculately groomed and spectacularly vibrant that only a small bald patch of earth at the baseline betrays that the grass is in fact real. The flowers that adorn the club must require an army of gardeners to maintain. The champions boards that line the walls of the pavilion are littered with household names and tennis legends, creating a feeling of connection with those who have truly loved and mastered our sport.

Of course it wouldn’t be Wimbledon without the threat of rain disrupting play, and the first day of the Championships were consequently moved to Aldershot. In the Ladies’ Singles fixtures, the Army took three out of a possible six rubbers positioning themselves ahead of the Royal Navy (with one rubber) and behind the RAF (with five rubbers) as they moved into the second day of competition. The Army needed to win all three doubles matches against the RAF on the second day in order to hold the title. Unfortunately, this proved too tall an order and both first and second seeds beat their Royal Navy opponents but lost to the RAF in a match tiebreak in lieu of a third set. Particular congratulations must go to the third seed pair, Lt Col Maddie Lewis and Cpl Hannah Bacon, who – having played together at the Inter-Service ‘B’ Championships – remain unbeaten this season.

Congratulations must also go to the Royal Air Force ladies, who fielded an exceptional team and well deserved their success. Next year, however, it’s coming back home.

* Many thanks to all the players that took part and to the RNLTA plus many others who helped run this Event,

a huge thank you goes to the AELTC for hosting us for the second year.

* We continue our thanks to all our loyal sponsors, highlighting MANTIS for their continued support to Army and Inter-Services Tennis.

Congratulations to all our players, we look forward to competing again at the Inter-Services A in 2020.
