Cambridge Mens June 2017 - Fixture
Army Mens vs Cambridge University Mens
18 June Friendly Fixture
The hottest day of the year yet saw the Army Mens Team play Cambridge University on the St. Jon's College grass courts - the Army's first foray into grass-court tennis for the season. The fixture was played in two rounds, with a mixture of singles and doubles in each round.
Round 1 saw Pte Munnery close out a tight match against the Cambridge No.1 pair in tough conditions due to the heat. The final score: 7-6 & 7-5 to the Army, and the Man of the Match award for Pte Munnery. 2Lt Hadcock had a more comfortable ride at No.2, winning
6-2 & 6-2, while LCpl Evans won his first set 6-0 before his opponent withdrew due
to illness. Spr Gregory and Capt Walter struggled in their doubles,
losing 2 and 2in a tight match not reflected by the score.
In Round 2, LCpl Evans comfortably won his singles 6-1 & 6-4. doing well to stay on top of a relatively consistent opponent, while Spr Gregory had less fortune, losing 3-6 & 3-6 against an opponent he had taken to a match tie break in the winter fixture. Pte Munnery and 2Lt Hadcock closed out a reasonably good doubles match 6-4 & 7-6, stepping up a gear when it was needed in the second set when they found themselves down a
break and needing to break back to stay in the set.
A good result - 5-2 to the Army - with very positive individual performances. From a captain's perspective, it is very pleasing (and helpful) to have a deep squad of players and a level of keenness that means that when players drop out due to exercise/injury, there are always others willing to step in at short notice who are more than up to the challenge. It is also pleasing to see a group of players improving on each occasion - notably Spr Gregory, LCpl Evans, and Capt Walter - and getting match experience of a high level under their belts.
Representing the Army in this Mens Fixture were the following players:
- 2Lt Alex Hadcock TBC
- LCpl Sam Evans (REME)
- Pte Reece Munnery (PARA)
- Spr Matt Gregory (RE)
